Treehouse community is a global network of treehouses and treehouse people focusing on sustainable living. We are a dynamic growing team of bio-constructors who specialise in treetop construction, harmonic architecture and wood working. We offer complete construction and maintenance services for tree health and treehouses, including technical climbing, rigging, suspension work, pruning and lightweight ecological construction.
The treehouses we build range from simple decks and play-rooms in the canopy to fully functional houses, cabins and castles in the branches.
Through years of research and field testing we have developed systems to make living in the canopy a comfortable alternative for anyone who chooses to have a treehouse. Our treehouses are built with utmost respect for the tree; using up-cycled rubber tyres to buffer the structure at any point where it rests against the branches. As part of our philosophy we never bolt or make holes in trees!
We believe in bringing people closer to nature by constructing a means to live in it. By choosing to live high above the ground, we allow the earth to continue to breathe and plants to grow. The thing is, in the world we live in, it’s easy not to be conscious about our environment. Amidst the chaos of global warming, overproduction and overpopulation, it’s pretty difficult to fully understand the impact which we all have on our planet. If you wear clothes, have a phone, laptop, ipod or a car then you’re playing a part in carbon emissions – there’s no way around it – but we can reduce our carbon footprint by trying to live a lower impact lifestyle.
This is why trees are important…
We have a symbiotic relationship with trees and plants. The carbon dioxide we exhale, they breathe in. The oxygen we inhale they breathe out.
Trees give us life! Sadly we forget to respect that. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation, approximately 18 million acres of forest are lost each year. The amazon rainforest which accounts for 20% of our worlds oxygen, is being burnt down at a rate of 200,000 acres every day. In cities we chop down trees to make way for roads and buildings, and mutilate them by removing all their branches.
Treehouses and other kinds of sustainable or natural structures, can help us to re-evaluate the connection we have with our environment.
Treehouses are often thought of as mystical places only imagined in fairy tales and not as the real living spaces which we are building. The driving force behind Treehouse Community is a passion to influence a positive change in consciousness and lifestyle.
Although Treehouse Community is an international network which has branches spreading to Brazil and parts of Europe, our main area of operation is in Auroville, India. Here, we’re learning about how to manage and maintain the forest from which we source some of our wood. For our timber needs we take only the dead or fallen trees which are given to us and the forest flourishes. Some of the tallest trees are over 25 metres high – pretty big for a forest which was only planted 50 years ago.
Besides our treehouse services we provide design and implementation for sky parks, zip lines, suspension bridges, log swings, giant seesaws and many other kinds of toys and gadgets. Wood art is a really important aspect of what we do. We make beautiful custom furniture, wooden tables sculpted from rare cross sections of large trees, naturally shaped wooden chairs, chopping boards, kitchen equipment, bamboo lampshades, natural wooden mirrors and bamboo multi plugs amongst other things.
Living in community is a way of life and a choice to collaborate with nature and the people we meet. It’s also a concept which is often hard understand because it encompasses so many things. It can be as simple as getting together once as month to hang out, or living in a house share and cooking together occasionally. For us living in community is one of the most special way to exist in this world.
